John experiences life as a client and learns the science of sleep. Before he can create the Cumulus drug, he has to learn how the whole process works – what is the chemical mixture given to sleepers, how does the hardware pick up your brainwaves and translate them back to a client, how do you clean and store the chemical for transmission, etc. This all comes as he attends Cornell and learns from the master – Dr. Lucius Santos. I had a professor like Dr. Santos. His kindness and mentoring meant everything to the students that attended his classes and worked for him in the lab. I wanted to capture the essence of a professor who truly cared and showed John the empathy he needed (which was in stark contrast to Karl’s teaching style).
